$16T Opportunity: Garlinghouse Sees Room For XRP In Institutional Settlement

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has highlighted a potential $16 trillion opportunity for blockchain technology, saying Ripple now processes approximately $16 trillion in annual payments and clearing activity across businesses it has acquired.
The figure is significant because Garlinghouse said digital assets currently represent close to zero percent of that volume. Rather than presenting the $16 trillion as existing XRP transactions, he described it as an opportunity to bring traditional financial activity onto modern blockchain infrastructure.
For XRP, the development is attracting attention because institutional settlement is one of the areas where the digital asset could potentially play a role. Ripple has positioned XRP alongside its broader payments infrastructure, stablecoin products and blockchain-based financial services.
Garlinghouse's comments also highlight the difference between Ripple's overall payment business and XRP usage. The $16 trillion figure should not be interpreted as $16 trillion of XRP transactions. Most of that activity currently does not run through digital assets.
The potential opportunity comes from converting even a portion of traditional payment and clearing flows to blockchain-based settlement. If institutions increasingly use digital assets for liquidity and settlement, XRP could potentially benefit from greater utility across selected payment corridors.
Ripple has continued expanding its institutional infrastructure through acquisitions, stablecoins, custody and payment services. Its June 2026 investment in Flutterwave, for example, was tied to plans to integrate RLUSD and the XRP Ledger into cross-border payments across Africa.
The $16 trillion figure therefore represents an opportunity rather than a guaranteed future volume for XRP. The key question for the market is how much of Ripple's traditional financial activity can eventually migrate to blockchain rails—and how much of that activity, if any, will require XRP as a settlement or liquidity asset.
