Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRP from escrow on September 1, 2026, as part of its established monthly release schedule. The tokens were released through three transactions involving 500 million, 400 million, and 100 million XRP.
The release immediately drew attention across the XRP market because of the potential impact of additional supply. However, an escrow unlock does not automatically mean that Ripple sold 1 billion XRP on the open market. Historically, a significant portion of unlocked XRP has been returned to escrow.
Following the September release, Ripple moved 700 million XRP back into escrow through two new escrow transactions. This means the amount remaining outside the newly created escrow positions was substantially smaller than the initial 1 billion XRP headline figure.
The escrow system dates back to 2017, when Ripple placed 55 billion XRP into escrow to make the future release of XRP more predictable. The structure allows Ripple to access XRP gradually while unused amounts can be locked again for future releases.
The latest transactions therefore highlight the difference between XRP being unlocked and XRP entering the market. Investors are watching subsequent wallet movements and escrow transactions to determine how much of the released supply could actually become available for business activities or market liquidity.
The timing has also attracted attention because XRP has recently experienced increased volatility. Market participants are balancing potential supply pressure from Ripple's escrow program against other factors, including institutional interest and activity across the XRP ecosystem.
For XRP holders, the key figure may not be the headline 1 billion XRP unlock, but what Ripple does with those tokens afterward. The continued re-locking of XRP suggests that the monthly escrow release should be viewed as an ongoing supply-management process rather than automatically as a billion-token sell event.
