Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin has crossed the $2 billion market capitalization milestone, marking a significant expansion since its launch in December 2024. Ripple says nearly $1 billion of the supply is issued directly on the XRP Ledger, highlighting the growing role of stablecoins within the XRPL ecosystem.
The milestone comes as Ripple continues positioning RLUSD for use beyond traditional crypto trading. The dollar-pegged stablecoin is designed for payments, settlement and other financial applications, giving institutions an on-chain alternative for moving dollar-denominated value.
RLUSD’s growth is also coinciding with a broader push toward institutional finance on the XRP Ledger. Ripple is supporting an initiative with Clearpool and Cicada Partners focused on providing working-capital loans denominated in RLUSD to fintech and payments companies.
If implemented as planned, the lending initiative could give RLUSD another important use case within the XRPL ecosystem. Instead of being used primarily for payments or trading, the stablecoin could become part of on-chain credit markets serving businesses with real financing needs.
The development also reflects Ripple’s broader strategy of building infrastructure for institutional decentralized finance. Ripple has highlighted upcoming XRPL capabilities involving institutional lending, tokenized assets, privacy and permissioned markets as part of the network’s evolution toward real-world financial applications.
For the XRP Ledger, greater RLUSD adoption could mean increased stablecoin liquidity and transaction activity. However, the relationship between RLUSD growth and XRP demand should not be overstated, as RLUSD and XRP serve different functions within the ecosystem.
With RLUSD now above $2 billion in market capitalization and institutional lending initiatives developing around the XRP Ledger, Ripple is entering a new phase of its stablecoin strategy. The key question going forward will be whether RLUSD can translate its rapid supply growth into sustained payments, settlement and institutional-finance activity.
