The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s approval of Ripple National Trust Bank has placed Ripple at the center of renewed discussions about the future of digital assets and traditional finance. The development represents an important step in Ripple’s broader strategy to connect blockchain-based financial infrastructure with the regulated banking system.

The OCC’s decision gives Ripple’s proposed national trust bank a regulated framework under federal oversight. However, the approval should not be interpreted as giving Ripple immediate access to the entire U.S. banking system or to trillions of dollars in assets. The charter is subject to regulatory conditions and focuses on trust and custody-related activities.

The $85 trillion figure has attracted particular attention because it represents assets under the control of institutions within the federal banking system. It does not mean that Ripple now controls or has direct access to $85 trillion. Instead, the figure highlights the enormous scale of the financial ecosystem in which regulated digital-asset companies are increasingly seeking to participate.

For Ripple, the charter could strengthen its position as it expands beyond its traditional role in blockchain payments. A regulated trust bank could potentially support custody, institutional services and other financial activities while giving the company a clearer connection to established financial infrastructure.

The development could also have implications for XRP and the broader XRP Ledger ecosystem. Greater institutional adoption of Ripple’s infrastructure could increase attention toward XRP, although the banking charter itself does not guarantee higher XRP demand or a rise in its market value.

The move comes as regulators and financial institutions continue to explore how blockchain technology can operate within established financial rules. Companies involved in digital assets are increasingly pursuing licenses, banking relationships and regulatory approvals rather than operating entirely outside traditional financial structures.

Ultimately, Ripple’s national trust bank charter represents a significant regulatory milestone, but its long-term impact will depend on how the bank operates, what services it ultimately provides and how institutions respond. The $85 trillion figure illustrates the scale of the financial system Ripple is moving closer to—not a pool of assets that Ripple can directly unlock or control.
